Fortnite Capture the
Flag Level

About
This project was mainly a level design pipeline focused on designing a level that fit for a 3v3 competitive gameplay, based on a theme (which this time was "pirates"), as well as creating a first pass art for it.
This was a solo project. It shows off my skills in not only level design and creating LDDs, but also my inherent understanding of Unreal Engine 5, Unreal Editor for Fortnite, and also my ability to take a level from a greyboxed state, to a presentable art state.

Level Design
Level Design Document
Before making the level itself, it started out as a Level Design Document. I began by planning the storyline, and creating the basic diagrams of the layout. I also compiled labeled references for each section of the map.

Level Creation - Grey Box
As the level is symmetrical, I had to only design the first half of the level, and could simply mirror it to the other side when I was done. This allowed me to create effortlessly fair maps, as well as allow me to spend more time perfecting each side.
For the grey box, I focused on:
- Big picture shapes
- Colour coordination for each team
- Item placements
- Cover spots

starting shack - player spawn area

shipwreck - middle of the level
This grey box level was mean to showcase how well it incentivizes different styles of play.
There are paths for players to go through the middle, for a more head-on playstyle. There is a path to go through the top, for a slower, but more cautious sniper playstyle. Finally, there is a path at the bottom of the ship, for a quick but dangerous playstyle.
Each path comes equipped with items that support each behaviour. For example, the top of the ship provides a grenade launcher that is a devastating weapon, but to get there requires a lot of time and effort.
Level Iteration
After the creation of the initial grey box, playtesting began. Due to this, I received feedback on how well my level is performing in doing what I planned for it to do.
After this, I ended up making changes to the level based on that feedback.

Art Pass
Asset Kit
I compiled a list of assets that I will be using, all of which are assets provided by Unreal Editor for Fortnite. In total, I prepared a list of 34 assets that will be used for every piece of the art pass for the level.
The list was then compiled in the LDD, labelling each item with what type of asset it is, as well as what subkit it belongs to.

Kit Bash
Following my grey box as closely as possible, I replaced each piece of the original grey box with the assets from my kit.
The final results were compared in my LDD.
